Patna: The Bihar government is preparing to overhaul fish retailing across urban centres by introducing branded ‘Fresh Catch’ kiosks under its Saat Nischay-3 programme. The kiosks, inspired by the state’s widely recognised Sudha Dairy milk parlours, are intended to replace informal roadside vending with organised, hygienic outlets offering fresh seafood to consumers.

The initiative is gaining traction in Buxar, where authorities have accelerated the process of identifying land for kiosk installation. Officials say the project will not only improve accessibility to quality fish in cities but also address sanitation issues arising from unregulated street-side sales of meat and seafood.

The Fresh Catch scheme forms part of the state’s broader push to strengthen agriculture-linked sectors and enhance rural livelihoods. By providing fish farmers with a direct retail interface, the government aims to reduce dependence on intermediaries, ensure better price discovery and increase farmers’ earnings while maintaining quality standards for consumers.

Authorities have prioritised high-footfall areas for kiosk placement, including municipal markets, public haats, railway colonies, bus terminals and densely populated residential neighbourhoods. District fisheries officials have also asked local bodies in Buxar and Dumraon to expedite land identification, noting that each kiosk will require roughly 15×15 sq ft of space. Coordination with revenue and block administration is underway to secure no-objection certificates and complete statutory approvals.

Experts say the move could bring greater transparency and standardisation to fish retailing while helping to reduce waste and improve cleanliness in public markets. The project has been categorised as a priority initiative, with district authorities tasked with close monitoring. Its pace of implementation will depend largely on land allocation and infrastructure readiness, which officials view as critical to translating the Saat Nischay-3 vision into operational reality.
