Patna: The Bihar government will begin recruiting for 1,800 assistant professor posts in state-run medical colleges within the next two to two-and-a-half months, Health Minister Mangal Pandey said on Tuesday.
Speaking at an appointment letter distribution ceremony in Patna, Mangal confirmed that 694 senior medical officers and medical officers were given appointment letters, adding that around 1,400 doctors have received such letters in the past 10 days.
“This is the second such appointment drive in just ten days. On May 31, we handed over letters to 228 doctors, and 509 PG doctors were posted. It’s a record in itself and a significant step towards tackling the doctor shortage in Bihar,” he said.
The Health Minister also highlighted ongoing and upcoming recruitment initiatives: the appointment of Ayush doctors is currently underway, 7,468 ANM nurses have been recruited—of which 7,300 have already taken charge—and plans are in place to appoint 4,500 community health officers (CHOs) in the next one-and-a-half months.
Mangal credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for prioritising the healthcare sector and ensuring financial support. “They never allowed a lack of funds to hinder Bihar’s medical infrastructure development,” he said.
He urged newly appointed doctors to serve patients with dedication, discipline, and compassion, emphasising the importance of teamwork in medical services.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department, Pratyaya Amrit, also addressed the gathering, calling on doctors to offer care with empathy. Referring to a recent incident at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), he said such events must not be repeated.
Amrit noted that while Bihar has significantly improved its healthcare infrastructure, there is still much to be done. He also congratulated Mangal Pandey for becoming the state’s longest-serving Health Minister.
