Patna: Bihar is in the grip of an intensifying heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 43°C in several districts and the Meteorological Department issuing a ‘Yellow Alert’ for extreme heat in at least six districts.
In Saran district, the mercury climbed to 43°C on Thursday, reflecting a broader trend across the state where maximum temperatures have ranged between 33°C and 43°C over the past 24 hours. The highest temperature of 43°C was recorded in Dehri (Rohtas), with no significant change observed in temperature patterns across most regions, according to the latest bulletin from the Patna Meteorological Centre.
Nights Offer Little Relief
Night temperatures have also remained high, ranging between 22°C and 27.5°C, offering little respite from the daytime heat. Winds of up to 46 kmph were recorded in Arwal, but these have done little to ease the prevailing conditions.
The impact of the heat has begun to show on public health infrastructure. Authorities have established dedicated heatwave wards in community hospitals in Buxar and Sasaram districts to handle cases of heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke and dehydration.
IMD Warns Of Continued Extreme Conditions
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that temperatures in several parts of south and south-west Bihar are likely to remain above 40°C, with some areas recording levels 3–4°C above normal over the next 24 hours. Despite this, no significant drop in temperatures is expected over the next three to four days, prolonging discomfort across the state.

Possible Weather Shift After April 28
While large parts of Bihar are expected to remain dry in the immediate term, the forecast indicates the possibility of isolated rainfall and cloud cover in parts of north and north-east Bihar over the coming days. A broader shift in weather patterns may occur after April 28, potentially bringing some relief to southern districts, including Patna, if the current weather system over north Bihar extends southwards.
The IMD has also cautioned about hot and humid conditions in districts such as Gaya, Nawada and Aurangabad, along with the risk of thunderstorms and gusty winds in parts of north Bihar later in the week.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid exposure during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heatstroke as Bihar braces for continued extreme weather in the coming days.
