Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Patna has issued a forecast for a week of continued inclement weather across Bihar. Over the next seven days, rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to persist, particularly in North Bihar districts along the Gandak, Koshi, Bagmati, and Mahananda rivers. This weather system could lead to a rapid increase in river water levels and potential flooding in low-lying areas.
The forecast comes as a powerful rain system has been active in Bihar for the past two days, with Purnia recording the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours. Many other districts, including Darbhanga, have also experienced very heavy downpours.
On Monday evening, IMD Patna issued an orange alert for several districts, indicating a high likelihood of heavy rain and thunderstorms. The forecast for the coming days is as follows:
- Monday and Tuesday: An orange alert for very heavy rain has been issued for East and West Champaran, Siwan, and Saran. Heavy rain is also expected in Sitamarhi, Gopalganj, Araria, and Kishanganj. Orange alerts have also been issued for Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Madhepura, Saharsa, Khagaria, Banka, Purnia, Bhagalpur, Jamui, Katihar, and Madhubani. A yellow alert for moderate rain and thunderstorms has been issued for other districts.
- Wednesday: West Champaran and Gopalganj are under an orange alert for very heavy rain, while Kishanganj has a heavy rain warning. Surrounding districts are on a yellow alert. Districts like Buxar, Bhojpur, and Begusarai currently have no weather warning.
IMD Patna has confirmed that a series of yellow alerts for different districts will be in effect until at least August 10, as the state remains under the influence of the active monsoon system. The public is advised to stay vigilant, especially in areas prone to waterlogging and flooding.
