Patna: Bihar has set its sights on the global stage, staking a claim to host the 2030 Men’s Hockey World Cup and the Commonwealth Games. The state government has also proposed organising the 2026 FIH Hockey Pro League, the 2028 National Youth Games, and the 2034 National Games, reflecting a broader push to enhance sports infrastructure and participation.
The National Youth Games, which will be held in India for the first time in 2028, is among the major competitions Bihar is bidding for. While multi-sport events, including the Commonwealth Games, have been prioritised in the state budget, details about the specific disciplines to be included have not yet been disclosed.
Under the Chief Minister’s Sports Development Plan, Bihar aims to construct international-standard sports facilities across all nine divisional headquarters. Work is already underway in Purnia and Saharsa divisions through the Bihar State Building Construction Corporation Limited. Across the state, 46 stadiums are under construction, and the government plans to develop at least one sports ground in each of the 8,053 gram panchayats of its 38 districts.
At the block level, 257 stadiums have been completed, with 46 currently under construction. In 25 districts, sports buildings with gyms have been completed at a total cost of Rs 165.25 crore, while 13 additional districts have received administrative approval for further construction. In Patna division, 100 acres in Dumri village, Punpun block, have been earmarked for sports infrastructure, with approval for Rs 57,433 crore in the 2025-26 financial year.
In 14 other locations—including West Champaran, Khagaria, Supaul, Saharsa, Purnia, Katihar, Bhagalpur, Jamui, Buxar, Arwal, Jehanabad, Aurangabad, and Kaimur stadiums, sports complexes, and related facilities are under construction, with a total investment of Rs 477.80 crore.
