Motihari/Patna : Police in Bihar’s Motihari district have uncovered an alleged illegal spirit smuggling operation after recovering around 400 litres of spirit from a truck in the Chhatauni police station area.

The spirit was allegedly concealed among other goods being transported in the truck. Police arrested the driver and are questioning him to determine the source of the consignment and its intended destination.

According to police, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Sadar-1, Dilip Kumar received information that a suspicious truck was parked near a weighbridge ahead of Manzoor Hospital in Mathia.

Acting on the information, a team from Chhatauni police station was formed under the SDPO’s direction and sent to the location.

400 litres of spirit recovered from 20 containers

When police initially inspected the truck, they found various types of goods loaded inside, making it appear to be a regular transport vehicle.

However, after officers conducted a detailed search, they allegedly found containers of spirit concealed among the other items.

Police recovered around 400 litres of spirit stored in 20 containers. The truck was subsequently seized and its driver arrested.

Spirit hidden among handpumps, oil and other goods

According to the police, the truck was carrying several types of merchandise, including:

  • Two Agro Power griders
  • 98 handpumps
  • 40 cartons of oil packets
  • Six packets of plastic slippers
  • 17 sewing machines
  • Pipes and other items

The spirit containers were allegedly hidden among these goods.

Goods reportedly transported from Kolkata

During preliminary questioning, police reportedly learned that the goods loaded on the truck had been transported from Kolkata.

Investigators are now trying to establish where the spirit was loaded onto the truck and who was supposed to receive the consignment after it reached Motihari.

Role of transport network under investigation

Police are also examining whether other people associated with the transport operation were involved in the alleged smuggling.

The arrested driver’s questioning is expected to help investigators trace the source of the spirit consignment and identify others who may be connected to the case.

Further investigation is underway.
