Patna: As India celebrates its Commonwealth Games 2030 victory and positions itself for a 2036 Olympic bid, Bihar is taking decisive steps to strengthen its sporting infrastructure. The state government has announced plans to provide international-standard facilities for athletes across the region.
A state-of-the-art Mondo track is set to be constructed at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Patna, at an estimated cost of Rs 20 crore. According to the Bihar State Sports Authority, the detailed proposal for the project has already been submitted to the state Sports Department.
Once completed, the track will be the third of its kind in India, after Delhi and Patiala, and the first in Eastern India. It is expected to serve athletes from Bihar as well as neighbouring states including Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh.
Ravindran Shankar, Director General of the State Sports Authority, described the track as a milestone for the state’s sporting ambitions. “Bihar’s athletes will now have access to the same quality of facilities as the world’s top competitors,” he said, adding that the track will also pave the way for hosting major national-level sporting events in the state.
In parallel with infrastructure development, the government is strengthening the grassroots sports ecosystem. District Coach Officers will soon be appointed across all districts, and expert coaches will be assigned to each sport, creating a structured pathway from the block level to the state level. The initiative aims to transform Bihar’s sports environment within the next two years.
The Mondo track, made from double-layer vulcanized rubber, offers strong grip, high speed, and low impact on joints, reducing the risk of injury while enhancing athletic performance. It is the standard surface for most Olympic and World Athletics competitions.
Experts have hailed the project as a “game changer” for Bihar’s sporting future, providing a platform for athletes to train at international standards and pursue global opportunities.
