Madhubani: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a public programme in Jhanjharpur, Madhubani district, on Thursday to mark Panchayati Raj Day, his first public appearance since the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, earlier this week.
In the wake of the attack that claimed 26 lives, including an Intelligence Bureau officer from Bihar, security across the state has been dramatically heightened. A state-wide high alert has been declared ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit.
Bihar’s Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar confirmed that all districts and police wings have been instructed to intensify patrolling, surveillance and intelligence gathering. “There is enhanced vigilance not only in Madhubani but across all sensitive locations in the state,” he said.
Key tourist and religious sites—including the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, Vishwa Shanti Stupa in Rajgir, Mahavir Mandir in Patna, and Takht Sri Harimandir Sahib—have all come under additional security cover.
Airports across Bihar are also on high alert, with heightened screening and monitoring of passengers and baggage. Meanwhile, special joint patrols are being conducted by senior police officials and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) units in districts bordering Nepal. “Given the open border and potential for cross-border infiltration, surveillance has been increased significantly,” DGP Kumar added.
The programme in Videshwar Sthan, where PM Modi is scheduled to speak, is expected to draw large crowds. Despite security concerns, the Madhubani event will proceed as planned, while the Prime Minister’s previously scheduled visit to Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has been cancelled.
The Pahalgam attack, which took place at a popular tourist site in South Kashmir, has been widely condemned. The dead include two foreign nationals, two locals, and numerous Indian tourists.
