Patna: A police team enforcing Bihar’s liquor prohibition law was attacked in Ganjpar village under Barh subdivision on Wednesday, leaving four officers injured and four vehicles damaged. The incident has triggered concern within the district administration, particularly as police patrols have been intensified during the election period.
According to officials, a Prohibition Department team had travelled in a convoy of six vehicles from Bakhtiyarpur via Ramnagar Diara in Athmagola when they spotted several men allegedly drinking and creating a disturbance near Ganjpar. Officers detained one man and placed him in a police vehicle, prompting a violent reaction from others present at the scene.
Rajendra Prasad, Inspector-in-Charge of the Prohibition Department, said the group quickly turned hostile. “They surrounded the team and began attacking with rods and stones. Four of our vehicles were damaged. Several policemen sustained injuries and were taken to Athmagola CHC for treatment,” he said.
The Prohibition Department later filed a complaint at Athmagola police station, naming 14 people and listing several unidentified others as accused. Station Head Naveen Kumar confirmed that one person, Sukhdev Kumar of Ganjpar village, has been arrested.
Police say heightened patrols are underway across the district during the election period, and strict action is being taken against any breach of law and order. The attack on the prohibition team, officials said, has caused alarm and further reinforcements have been deployed in the area. An investigation is ongoing.
