Patna: Bihar Police has said that RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav and former chief minister Rabri Devi continue to receive security cover, hours after reports and political claims suggested their protection had been withdrawn.
In a statement posted on its official X account, the police headquarters said both leaders have been provided with bodyguards, escort personnel and residential security, and that their protection arrangements remain in place.
The clarification follows controversy over the recent reduction in their Z-plus security category.
Police reject withdrawal claims
Police officials said the security cover of the two senior leaders had not been removed, but revised as part of a routine review process.
According to the statement, the changes were made in line with updated security assessments and standard protocols.
The department said the existing arrangements were appropriate to the current threat perception.
Revised security arrangements
Under the revised setup, Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi have been provided with a bulletproof vehicle, pilot car and personnel from the Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP).
Police also said a ballistic-resistant vehicle had been made available under provisions related to VIP security protocols.
In addition, plainclothes personnel from the Special Branch have been deployed based on situational requirements.
Political reactions and support from party workers
The clarification came after RJD leaders and supporters raised concerns over the reduction in security.
Party workers had gathered outside Lalu Prasad’s residence at 10 Circular Road in Patna and have remained present there following the reported changes in official deployment.
Earlier on Wednesday, Lalu Prasad had acknowledged that his security cover had been reduced.
Security review under scrutiny
The Bihar government had earlier scaled down the Z-plus security cover of both leaders in early June 2026.
The latest clarification from police indicates that while the category of security may have changed, the leadership continues to be provided with official protection.
Police headquarters said security arrangements would continue to be reviewed periodically in accordance with established guidelines.
