Patna: The Bihar cabinet has approved a major expansion of the police force, clearing recruitment and promotion for 20,937 sub-inspector (daroga) posts, officials said.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Samrat Chaudhary, as part of efforts to strengthen law enforcement in line with the state’s growing population.
Recruitment And Promotion Split
Officials said 50% of the posts will be filled through direct recruitment, while the remaining 50% will be filled through promotions from the rank of assistant sub-inspector (ASI).
This translates to 10,469 posts through fresh recruitment and 10,468 through departmental promotions.
Additional chief secretary Arvind Chaudhary said the move aims to improve policing capacity while providing career progression within the force.
Boost To Traffic Policing
To strengthen traffic management systems, the cabinet also approved the creation of 485 posts across different categories in traffic police units in Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Bihar Sharif and Gaya.
Additionally, 1,606 previously created posts have been earmarked for strengthening traffic operations.
Education Sector Expansion
The cabinet also approved the creation of 9,152 posts across 208 degree colleges to be established under state expansion plans.
Each college will have 44 posts, and an allocation of Rs 104 crore—at Rs 50 lakh per college—has been sanctioned for renovation and infrastructure upgrades.
Power Subsidy Approved
Separately, the cabinet approved Rs 23,165 crore under the chief minister electricity consumer assistance scheme for 2026–27.
Officials said the subsidy will ensure continued access to affordable electricity for consumers across the state.
