Patna: Prepaid electricity meter users in Bihar could soon benefit from reduced bills, as the state government considers a concession of up to 25 paise per unit, according to reports. A final decision on the proposal may be announced as early as Wednesday.
The Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) has reportedly given its consent to revise electricity rates and rationalise tariff slabs. If approved, the changes would also include an urban domestic consumer subsidy of 18 paise per unit, set to take effect from April 1.
The move is expected to benefit the growing number of households with smart prepaid meters. Users could see a direct reduction in their monthly electricity bills, easing the financial burden for many families across the state.
At the same time, the Commission is reviewing proposals from the North and South Bihar Power Distribution Companies, which have requested a uniform increase of 35 paise per unit across all consumer categories to cover rising operational costs. The final rates, expected to be announced soon, will attempt to balance concessions for prepaid meter users with the broader demand for increased tariffs.
Following public hearings, the Commission has indicated that it will seek to mitigate the impact on ordinary consumers while implementing the new rates from April 1, aiming for a compromise between relief and sustainability in Bihar’s power sector.
