Patna: A young artist from Bihar has brought international acclaim to Indian sand art by becoming the first Indian to be inducted into the London Book of World Records for his creative achievements.
Madhurendra Kumar, 31, a native of Motihari, Bihar, was felicitated at a ceremony held in the British Parliament, where he received the prestigious recognition for his contribution to sand and leaf art. The event was attended by Dr Avinash D Sakunde, international president of the London Book of World Records, and Dr Ivan Gasina, head of the European Union.
The award celebrates Madhurendra’s record-breaking creation of over 5,000 artworks that deliver socially positive messages through innovative techniques in sand and leaf art. “Setting a new standard in creative expression for social awareness is commendable,” said Dr Sakunde. Dr Gasina praised Madhurendra for elevating Indian art on the global stage, noting that his work sends a strong message of positivity and cultural pride.
A June 2025 international survey conducted across 12 countries placed Madhurendra at the top of a global list of artists, with a 95% approval rating, ahead of contenders from the US, China, Russia, Sri Lanka, and Canada.
Union minister Ramdas Athawale also extended his congratulations, hailing the achievement as a moment of pride for India. Social media platforms have since been flooded with messages from political leaders, academics, and citizens applauding the artist’s feat.
