Patna: Thousands of students in Bihar are set to march through Patna on Tuesday in protest against a sharp reduction in teaching posts advertised under the state’s fourth phase of teacher recruitment (TRE-4).

The demonstrators are demanding that the government honour earlier commitments to fill 120,000 vacancies, rather than the 27,910 now being offered. Protesters plan to gather at Patna College at 11am before marching past Khetan Market, Bakarganj, Gandhi Maidan, JP Golambar and Dak Bungalow Square, towards the chief minister’s residence.

Student leader Dilip accused the government of “cheating” young people in the state. He said successive announcements had raised expectations of large-scale recruitment – at times promising 50,000, 80,000 and eventually 120,000 positions – but that these numbers were cut drastically once new domicile rules came into effect.

“It is clear that the figures were inflated earlier to allow jobs for candidates from outside Bihar, but now the youth of Bihar are being betrayed,” Dilip said, adding that both the chief minister and deputy chief minister had publicly committed to the larger figure on several occasions.

Education minister Sunil Kumar defended the government’s position, saying more than 26,000 teaching posts would be recruited under TRE-4. He confirmed that exams would take place from December 16 to 19, with results to be published between January 20 and 26,2026. He insisted the recruitment process would be “transparent and timely”.
