Patna: Bihar is witnessing a major expansion of its road infrastructure, with 13 expressways and four-lane road projects being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 2.06 lakh crore. Together, these projects will cover around 2,485 km across the state and are expected to significantly improve connectivity with Delhi, Kolkata, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and the northeastern states.
Several projects are already under construction, while land acquisition and preparatory work are underway on others. Some projects are yet to begin construction.
Once completed, the projects are expected to reduce travel time, improve freight movement, lower logistics costs and boost connectivity to industrial, commercial and religious tourism destinations.
One of the major projects is the Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata Greenfield Expressway, which is expected to provide faster connectivity from Bihar to Delhi and Kolkata. Once the network is completed, travel from Gaya to Delhi could take around 12 hours and to Kolkata around four hours.
The recently approved Buxar-Bhagalpur Greenfield Expressway, measuring around 336 km, is also expected to strengthen east-west connectivity across Bihar. The project has an estimated cost of Rs 3,700 crore.
Here is the current status and expected benefits of the 13 major road projects in Bihar:
1. Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata Greenfield Expressway
The Bihar section of the Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata Greenfield Expressway will be around 170 km long and is being developed in seven packages.
The project is expected to improve road connectivity between Bihar, Delhi and Kolkata while reducing freight transportation costs.
Construction is underway on several stretches in Bihar. Work is progressing on a 27-km stretch in Kaimur, a 16-km section in Sasaram, a 17-km section in Kaimur, a 35-km section in Aurangabad and a 33-km section in Gaya.
A tunnel was originally proposed through the Adhaura hills in Kaimur. However, wildlife-related concerns created difficulties in executing the tunnel project. A realignment has now been proposed, which could increase the route length by around 17-18 km. A final decision on the alignment is awaited.
Gaya to Delhi in around 12 hours
Once the expressway and connecting highways are operational, travel from Gaya to Delhi could take around 12 hours, while Kolkata could be reached in approximately four hours.
The route is expected to allow vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 120 kmph, subject to applicable speed limits and road conditions, without regular traffic signals or major at-grade intersections.
From Gaya, motorists heading towards Delhi will be able to use the Varanasi-Kolkata Greenfield Expressway towards Varanasi and then connect to the Purvanchal Expressway, Lucknow Expressway and Yamuna Expressway.
2. Gorakhpur-Siliguri Greenfield Expressway
The Gorakhpur-Siliguri Greenfield Expressway is expected to improve connectivity between Bihar and northeastern states such as Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim.
The four-lane expressway is planned with scope for future expansion to six lanes.
The project could reduce the travel distance between Gopalganj and Siliguri from around 512 km to 435 km, allowing the journey to be completed in approximately five hours.
It is also expected to improve connectivity from Gopalganj towards Delhi through the Gorakhpur-Shamli Expressway.
Construction has not yet started.
3. Raxaul-Haldia Expressway
The Raxaul-Haldia Expressway is planned to connect districts such as East Champaran, Samastipur and Begusarai with the Haldia port in West Bengal.
The project is expected to facilitate the movement of goods from Bihar to the port and improve import-export logistics, potentially supporting industrial activity in the state.
The journey from Raxaul to Haldia, which currently takes around 20 hours, is expected to be reduced to approximately 10 hours after completion.
Land acquisition is currently underway.
4. Amas-Darbhanga Greenfield Expressway
The Amas-Darbhanga Greenfield Expressway will provide direct road connectivity between south and north Bihar.
Most of the expressway will be six lanes, while some stretches will have four lanes.
Construction is underway in four packages, with work in Darbhanga reportedly at an advanced stage. Around 40% of the project has been completed.
Once operational, the expressway is expected to reduce the travel time between Gaya and Darbhanga to around four hours.
It will also connect the Delhi-Kolkata Highway with NH-27, which provides a major east-west route towards Assam, improving freight movement.
5. Patna Ring Road
The Patna Ring Road is being developed on the lines of major urban ring roads, with a planned road network of around 150 km covering an area of approximately 1,350 sq km.
The project is expected to ease congestion in Patna by allowing vehicles travelling between districts such as Vaishali, Saran, Ara and Buxar to bypass the city.
The ring road will connect 12 national highways and five state highways and is being developed in six packages.
The Kanhauli-Ramnagar section has been completed.
The contract for the Kanhauli-Sherpur section has been finalised, with construction expected to begin after the monsoon.
A bridge over the Ganga is planned between Sherpur and Dighwara, where around 20% of the work has been completed.
The alignment for the Dighwara-Sarai section has been approved and land acquisition is expected to begin.
Around 5% work has been completed on the Kacchi Dargah-Ramnagar section.
The six-lane Ganga bridge between Kacchi Dargah and Bidupur has already been completed.
6. Patna-Purnea Greenfield Expressway
The Patna-Purnea Greenfield Expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the state capital and Purnea.
The journey, which currently takes more than six hours, could be reduced to around three hours after the expressway becomes operational.
The project is also expected to improve connectivity to the Kosi and Seemanchal regions and support their economic development.
7. Ram-Janaki Marg
The four-lane Ram-Janaki Marg is expected to boost religious tourism and connectivity between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
The route will connect important locations associated with the Ramayana circuit. After visiting the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, travellers could reach Sitamarhi, regarded as the birthplace of Goddess Sita, in around five hours.
The route is also associated with the traditional Ram-Janaki pilgrimage circuit connecting Ayodhya and Janakpur.
The existing road distance between Ayodhya and Janakpur is around 459 km, with travel taking approximately 15 hours. The new road is expected to reduce the distance by around 90 km.
Work progressing in four packages
Construction is underway in four packages.
Around 10% work has been completed on the 40-km stretch from Mehraul Ghat near the Uttar Pradesh border to Siwan.
Around 12% work has been completed on the 50-km Siwan-Mashrakh section.
Land acquisition is underway for the 80-km Mashrakh-to-Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway section.
Land is also being acquired for the 45-km section connecting the Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway to Bhitthamore in Sitamarhi.
8. Mokama-Munger Four-Lane Road
The 82.4-km Mokama-Munger four-lane road is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 4,447 crore.
The road will pass through Mokama and Lakhisarai before reaching Jamalpur and Munger.
The journey from Patna to Munger currently takes around four to five hours. Once the four-lane road is completed, the travel time could fall to less than three hours.
The project forms part of the Buxar-Bhagalpur corridor and is expected to improve connectivity between Patna and Munger while facilitating travel towards Jharkhand.
It is also expected to support development in the Munger-Lakhisarai Tal region.
Construction is expected to begin after the monsoon.
9. Danapur-Bihta-Koilwar Elevated Corridor
The 25-km Danapur-Bihta-Koilwar Elevated Corridor is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1,969 crore.
The corridor will connect Danapur with Bihta and Koilwar and provide onward connectivity towards Ara and Buxar.
The project is expected to reduce traffic pressure at major locations in Patna, including Danapur, Saguna Mor and Shivala.
Once operational, travel from Patna to the upcoming Bihta airport is expected to take around 25 minutes.
Approximately 60% of the construction work has been completed, with the project targeted for completion by August 2027.
10. Rajauli-Bakhtiyarpur Corridor
The 154-km Rajauli-Bakhtiyarpur Corridor is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 3,800 crore as a four-lane expressway and access-controlled highway.
The Rajauli-Bakhtiyarpur section has been completed in two packages.
A seven-km section between the Jharkhand border and Rajauli was initially planned. However, the alignment has been changed because of forest-related issues, and the road will now pass outside the forest area.
Land acquisition is required for the Rajauli-Koderma section. The package has increased from around seven km to 29 km following the change in alignment.
11. Patna-Manikpur-Areraj-Bettiah Four-Lane Road
The 163.68-km Patna-Manikpur-Areraj-Bettiah four-lane road is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 5,996 crore.
The project is expected to improve connectivity between Patna, Vaishali, Saran, East Champaran and West Champaran.
It will reduce the road distance between Patna and Bettiah from around 205 km to 163 km. Travel time is expected to fall from approximately five hours to around three hours.
The first package covers the 39-km Bakarpur-Manikpur section, where around 60% work has been completed.
Around 10% work has been completed on the 44-km Manikpur-Sahebganj section under the second package.
The third package covers the 78-km Sahebganj-Areraj-Bettiah section. Construction is expected to begin after the monsoon.
12. Patna-Ara-Sasaram Greenfield Highway
The 120.10-km Patna-Ara-Sasaram Greenfield Highway is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 3,712 crore in two packages.
Construction has started on the first package, covering the Suara area of Sasaram to Garhani.
Work on the second package, from Garhani to Sadisopur, has not yet started and is expected to begin after the monsoon.
13. Munger-Mirzachauki Greenfield Four-Lane Road
The 124-km Munger-Mirzachauki Greenfield four-lane road is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 5,788 crore.
Around 90% of the overall work has been completed.
The first package covers the 23-km Munger-Khariya village stretch and has an estimated cost of Rs 981 crore. Around 85% work has been completed.
The second package covers the 30-km Khariya village-to-Bhagalpur bypass section and is estimated to cost Rs 902 crore.
The third package covers 32 km from the Bhagalpur bypass to RasulÂpur village near Kahalgaon and has an estimated cost of Rs 1,017 crore.
The fourth package covers the 37-km RasulÂpur-Mirzachauki section and has an estimated cost of Rs 892 crore. Around 95% work has been completed on this stretch.
Major benefits expected from Bihar’s road expansion
The network of expressways and four-lane highways is expected to bring several major benefits to Bihar, including:
- Faster connectivity between north and south Bihar.
- Reduced travel time to Delhi, Kolkata, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.
- Better access to northeastern states.
- Improved connectivity to ports such as Haldia.
- Lower logistics and freight transportation costs.
