Patna: In a major push towards clean and sustainable public transport, the Bihar government is set to introduce electric buses across all 38 districts, aiming to provide pollution-free and comfortable travel to commuters.
According to the Transport Department, the Centre will provide 400 electric buses to Bihar under the PM e-Bus Seva scheme. In the first phase, the state capital Patna will receive 150 electric buses. Other major cities, including Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Purnia, Gaya, and Darbhanga, have been allocated 50 buses each.
To support the new fleet, around 30 modern charging stations will be developed in these cities.
Second Phase to Cover Remaining Districts
In the second phase of the rollout, the remaining 32 districts will be included. District headquarters such as Motihari, Bettiah, Arrah, Sasaram, Jehanabad, and Samastipur will each receive 10 electric buses. These districts will also see the development of 10 to 15 charging points to ensure smooth operations.
Benefits of Electric Buses
Officials highlighted several advantages of the electric bus initiative. Unlike conventional diesel buses, electric buses do not emit harmful gases such as carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide, which helps reduce air pollution and smog levels.
Operating costs are also lower compared to diesel buses, which could translate into more affordable fares for passengers. Additionally, electric buses run almost silently, helping reduce noise pollution on city roads.
The move is also expected to improve public health by lowering PM2.5 and PM10 levels, thereby reducing the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize public transport infrastructure in Bihar while addressing rising pollution concerns.
