Patna: Bihar is witnessing one of the country’s biggest road infrastructure transformations, with the construction of multiple six-lane and four-lane expressways and highways worth over Rs 2.11 lakh crore. The ambitious projects are expected to significantly improve connectivity, reduce travel time, boost trade, and accelerate industrial and economic growth across the state.

Major projects under construction include the Gorakhpur-Siliguri Greenfield Expressway, Varanasi-Kolkata Greenfield Expressway, Raxaul-Haldia Expressway, Amas-Darbhanga Expressway, Patna Ring Road, Patna-Purnia Expressway, and Ram Janaki Marg among others.

Once completed, several of these access-controlled expressways will allow vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h, drastically cutting journey durations between key cities in Bihar and neighbouring states.

Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway to Boost Northeast Connectivity

The six-lane Gorakhpur-Siliguri Greenfield Expressway is expected to improve connectivity between Bihar and northeastern states such as Assam, Meghalaya, and Sikkim. Vehicles will be able to travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h on the expressway.

The project will reduce the distance between Gopalganj and Siliguri from around 512 km to 435 km, allowing commuters to complete the journey in nearly five hours. The expressway will also improve road access to Delhi through the Gorakhpur-Shamli corridor.

Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway to Cut Travel Time

The six-lane Varanasi-Kolkata Greenfield Expressway, being developed in seven phases, will connect Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The route will pass through Bhabua, Sasaram, Aurangabad, and Gaya in Bihar.

Officials believe the expressway will facilitate faster export of goods to Kolkata port while reducing logistics costs for industries in Bihar. Vehicles will be able to travel uninterrupted at speeds up to 120 km/h due to the signal-free and access-controlled design.

Travel time from Gaya to Kolkata is expected to reduce from more than nine hours to under five hours.

Raxaul-Haldia Corridor to Strengthen Exports

Land acquisition and construction work are underway for the six-lane Raxaul-Haldia Greenfield Expressway. The corridor will directly connect districts such as East Champaran, Samastipur, and Begusarai with Haldia Port in West Bengal.

The project is expected to boost exports of products like makhana, litchi, and agricultural produce from north Bihar. Travel time from Raxaul to Haldia is likely to reduce from nearly 20 hours to around 11 hours after completion.

Amas-Darbhanga Expressway to Link North and South Bihar

The Amas-Darbhanga Greenfield Expressway will provide direct connectivity between north and south Bihar. Most sections will be six-lane, while some stretches will have four lanes.

Construction work is ongoing in multiple packages, including bridges and railway overbridges. The project will connect Arwal, Jehanabad, Patna, Vaishali, Samastipur, Gaya, Aurangabad, and Darbhanga.

After completion, commuters will be able to travel from Gaya to Darbhanga in around four hours.

Patna Ring Road to Ease Traffic Congestion

The Patna Ring Road project aims to reduce traffic congestion in the state capital by creating a 150-km network covering around 1,350 square kilometres.

Designed on the lines of Delhi’s Ring Road, the signal-free corridor will connect 12 national highways and five state highways. Vehicles will be able to bypass Patna city and travel directly toward neighbouring districts such as Vaishali, Saran, Ara, and Buxar.

Patna-Purnia Expressway to Transform Seemanchal Region

The six-lane Patna-Purnia Greenfield Expressway is targeted for completion by 2028. The project will reduce travel time between Patna and Purnia from over six hours to nearly three hours.

The expressway will include 21 major bridges, 140 minor bridges, 11 railway overbridges, 21 interchanges, and 32 underpasses. Officials believe the project will accelerate development in the Kosi and Seemanchal regions.

Ram Janaki Marg to Promote Religious Tourism

Construction is also progressing on the four-lane Ram Janaki Marg connecting Ayodhya with Janakpur in Nepal via Bihar.

The highway is expected to boost religious tourism by allowing devotees visiting the Ram Temple in Ayodhya to reach Sitamarhi — believed to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita — within five hours.

The project will reduce the Ayodhya-Janaki route distance from 459 km to nearly 369 km.

Patna-Gaya-Dobhi Corridor Improves Connectivity

The four-lane Patna-Gaya-Dobhi corridor has already improved travel between Patna and Gaya, reducing journey time to around 90 minutes.

The corridor includes multiple rail overbridges, bypasses, and service roads, and is being developed as a green corridor with fruit-bearing trees planted along both sides.

Other Key Highway Projects

Several other road projects are also under various stages of development, including:

  • Mokama-Munger Four-Lane Corridor
  • Danapur-Bihta-Koilwar Elevated Corridor
  • Rajouli-Bariarpur Corridor
  • Patna-Manikpur-Areraj-Bettiah Four-Lane Highway
  • Vishwamitra Path along the Ganga river
  • Patna-Ara-Sasaram Greenfield Highway
  • Bidupur-Dighwara Expressway featuring a marine drive along the northern bank of the Ganga

The Bihar government and central agencies believe these mega infrastructure projects will improve freight movement, strengthen interstate connectivity, reduce transportation costs, encourage industrial investments, and create new employment opportunities across the state.

With several projects already under construction and others moving through land acquisition and DPR stages, Bihar is positioning itself for a major connectivity and economic transformation over the coming years.
