Patna: In a major push towards green mobility, the Bihar government has announced plans to install more than 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points at around 4,000 petrol pumps across the state by March 2027.
The initiative aims to eliminate range anxiety among EV users and strengthen the state’s charging infrastructure, enabling more than two lakh electric vehicles to be charged every day.
Under the plan, EV owners will have access to charging facilities at intervals of 3 to 5 kilometres along approximately 10,000 kilometres of national and state highways. Depending on the size and location of each fuel station, five to ten charging points will be installed at every petrol pump.
The charging stations will cater to a wide range of electric vehicles, including cars, two-wheelers, scooters, three-wheelers and buses.
In another significant step, the government has allowed private individuals to establish EV charging stations on their own land, a move expected to accelerate the expansion of the charging network across Bihar.
Fast Chargers to Recharge Vehicles in Around 45 Minutes
The state is installing DC fast chargers at petrol pumps, which can recharge compatible electric vehicles in approximately 45 minutes, substantially reducing waiting time for motorists.
Subsidy Available for Eligible EV Buyers
The Transport Department said that only eligible electric vehicles purchased on or after May 15, 2026, will qualify for the state’s EV subsidy.
Under the scheme:
- Buyers of eligible electric two-wheelers can receive a subsidy of ₹10,000 to ₹12,000.
- Women purchasing eligible electric four-wheelers can avail subsidies of up to ₹1 lakh.
Applications for the incentive must be submitted online through the Transport Department’s official website.
Government, Oil Companies Expanding Charging Network
Confirming the initiative, Raj Kumar, Secretary, Transport Department, said work is already underway to establish EV charging stations at petrol pumps across Bihar through both government and private participation, with subsidies also being provided to encourage adoption.
Meanwhile, Rajeev Kumar, State Retail Head, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), said fast chargers are being installed at petrol pumps in Bihar and Jharkhand with the objective of minimising charging time and making long-distance travel more convenient for electric vehicle users.
The expansion of the charging infrastructure is expected to significantly improve EV adoption in Bihar by providing reliable and accessible charging facilities across urban centres and major highways.
