Patna: The Bihar government has transferred 150.13 acres of land near the Shobhan-Ekmi bypass to facilitate the construction of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Darbhanga, according to Sanjay Kumar Jha, national working president of the JD(U) and Rajya Sabha MP. The move follows directives from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. An additional 37.13 acres of land is expected to be provided by the state later this month, bringing the total to over 187 acres for the project.
The transfer of land comes in response to a letter from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, dated July 25, which approved the proposed site near the Shobhan-Ekmi bypass for the establishment of the AIIMS. The state government promptly handed over the 150.13 acres to the Centre at no cost. Additionally, the state has committed to providing four-lane road connectivity to the site, along with arrangements for electricity and water supply, using its own resources.
The establishment of Darbhanga AIIMS marks a significant development for Bihar, making it only the second state in India to host two AIIMS institutions. The new facility, located on the outskirts of Darbhanga city, is expected to spur rapid development and generate new employment opportunities in the region.
In parallel, the state government is undertaking a major redevelopment of the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), with a Rs. 2,742.04 crore plan to construct a new 2,500-bed hospital. Once completed, the two super-specialty hospitals will position Darbhanga as a key medical hub, serving not only North Bihar but also patients from neighboring Nepal.
