Bagaha/Bettiah: The Valmikinagar Tiger Reserve (VTR) officially reopened its gates for the annual Jungle Safari season on Thursday, concluding a crucial four-month conservation hiatus. Conservator of Forests Dr. Neshamani and Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Vikas Ahlawat jointly flagged off the first safari jeeps in the morning, successfully launching the season after the recess for animal breeding and the monsoon rains.
The first group of tourists included Executive Engineers from the Energy Department, Alok Amritanshu, Rajan Kumar, and Raju Kumar, who were eager to experience the morning session.
Thrilling Wildlife Sightings
Tourists reported an immediately rewarding experience, with numerous sightings of herbivorous and carnivorous animals. The highlight for many was the close observation of a bear during the jungle safari.
Arshad Jameel, a first-time visitor from Motihari, expressed his excitement, stating he saw “bears, sambar, deer, peacocks, and many birds up close.” Fellow tourist Rajan Kumar, a seasoned safari enthusiast, noted that despite having done safaris before, this was the first time he had the opportunity to see bears so closely, adding, “I am extremely happy.”
Private Operators Welcomed
Conservator of Forests Dr. Neshamani K confirmed that the four-month shutdown, which is vital for the region’s diverse wildlife, including tigers and rhinoceroses, has concluded. With the season now underway, the Forest Department is extending an invitation to local entrepreneurs.
“Now, with the start of this season, the Forest Department will allow private jeep operators to operate jungle safaris,” Dr. Neshamani announced, encouraging interested locals to contact the department to obtain the necessary permission to participate in the tourism efforts.
Beyond wildlife viewing, VTR offers tourists a mix of religious and adventure activities. Visitors can explore the ashram of Maharishi Valmiki, the ancient Kaleshwar Temple, and the Jatashankar Temple. For adventure seekers, the area also features a canopy walk and rafting in the Gandak river.
