Patna: Bihar is set to introduce its first water metro service, connecting Patna and Hajipur, in a project modelled on the Kochi Water Metro. Officials said the service would offer commuters a faster, cheaper and more environmentally friendly transport option across the Ganga.
The Hajipur MLA, Awadhesh Singh, confirmed that the initiative, long under consideration, had now been taken up by the Inland Waterways Authority of India and the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The state’s Urban Development Department has begun preparations.
Abhilasha Sharma, joint secretary of the department, has written to the Patna Municipal Corporation commissioner, Hajipur Municipal Council’s executive officer Sushil Kumar, and the Sonpur Nagar Panchayat, asking for details on infrastructure and readiness.
Officials have been asked to provide reports on the condition of ghats, including Konharaghat, Chechar Ghat, Kalighat and Panapur, as well as data on the number of boats in operation, estimated daily passengers and the status of connecting roads.
