Bihar Flood Fears Rise: Ganga, Punpun in Spate; Diara Schools Shut, Hospital Flooded as Heavy Rain Alert Covers 31 Districts

Patna: Weather conditions have turned wetter across Bihar, with intermittent rain continuing in Patna since Tuesday and waterlogging reported in several areas. Heavy rain also lashed Supaul late Tuesday evening, while Buxar, Bhojpur and Khagaria received intermittent showers.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for 31 districts today, including Patna, warning of heavy rainfall. The remaining seven districts are expected to see comparatively normal weather, although cloudy skies and increased humidity are likely.

Low-pressure system to keep Bihar wet

According to the IMD, a low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal and adjoining Gangetic regions. The system is expected to influence weather conditions across Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar and remain active for the next 48 hours, through September 5.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected in several parts of Bihar on September 3 and 4 as well. While rainfall intensity may gradually decline after September 5, isolated showers could continue.

Ganga above danger mark, Patna flood risk rises

The Ganga is in spate across Bihar, with the flood threat in Patna intensifying following the release of around 4.25 lakh cusecs of water into the Son River from Indrapuri Barrage.

At Digha Ghat, the Ganga is already flowing above the danger mark.

The Punpun River has risen 160 cm above the danger mark, adding to concerns in low-lying and riverine areas.

Schools have remained closed in the diara areas of Mokama and Bakhtiyarpur, as well as Nakta Diara in Sadar block and Pannapur Diara in Danapur. Water entering hospitals has also disrupted medical services in affected areas.

Roads submerged as rivers swell

In Jehanabad, a sudden rise in the Dardha River has caused water to flow over the Jafarganj Bridge. Around two feet of water is reportedly flowing across the bridge, disrupting movement.

In Buxar, rising Ganga levels have caused several tributaries to swell. Water from the Karmanasa River has risen around three feet above the road leading to Sikraul village, creating major difficulties for residents travelling along the route.

The situation has also worsened around the Kaimur hills, which received heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. Rivers near Gupta Dham, including the Durgawati, Sugwa, Avsani near Nauhatta, Tutlahi near Tilouthu and Kav near Sasaram, are reported to be in spate.

Patna likely to receive more heavy rain

The sky over Patna is expected to remain cloudy today, with the possibility of heavy rain. Rainfall activity is likely to continue in the capital on September 3 as well.

Thunderstorms accompanied by rain are expected in several parts of Bihar through September 4, while rain and lightning activity could persist until September 5.

Bihar still has 40% monsoon deficit

Despite the recent increase in rainfall, Bihar’s overall monsoon rainfall remains substantially below normal.

The state should have received 782.6 mm of rainfall by this point in the season but has recorded only 487.6 mm, leaving a deficit of approximately 40%.

Several districts, however, recorded substantial rainfall during the past 24 hours. Aurangabad received 110 mm, Rohtas 103 mm, Nawada 94.3 mm and Gaya 83 mm.

The latest rainfall is expected to reduce the deficit to some extent, particularly across parts of South Bihar, even as the continuing rise in river levels remains a major concern for flood-prone areas.
