Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 25 districts in Bihar on Friday as monsoon activity remains strong across parts of the state. The weather department has warned of thunderstorms, rainfall, and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph, with the possibility of lightning at isolated places.
According to the IMD, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and winds of 30–40 kmph are expected in several districts from August 1 onwards. Districts including Araria, Katihar, Purnea, Supaul, Bhojpur, Buxar, Gaya, Nawada, Begusarai, Madhepura, Samastipur, Vaishali, and West Champaran are likely to experience heavy rain on different days over the coming week.
During the last 24 hours, rainfall was recorded in 10 districts, including Patna and Bettiah, while several other areas witnessed cloudy skies and light winds.
Despite the recent improvement in monsoon activity, Bihar continues to face a significant rainfall deficit. The state has received only 288 mm of rainfall so far this season, compared to the normal 494.8 mm, representing a 42% rainfall deficit.
Monsoon Active in North and East Bihar
Meteorologists said the monsoon is not uniformly active across Bihar. Moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal continue to influence north and eastern Bihar, resulting in increased cloud formation and frequent rainfall.
In contrast, southern and central Bihar are receiving less moisture, leading to below-normal rainfall. However, rising heat and humidity during the afternoon are triggering the development of localised storm clouds, causing sudden showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds in some districts.
Patna and South Bihar Weather Forecast
The weather in Patna is expected to remain largely normal on Friday, with intermittent cloud cover but a low probability of rainfall. High humidity and bright sunshine are likely to make conditions uncomfortable.
Similar weather is expected in several districts of south Bihar, including Gaya, Nalanda, and Nawada, where residents may continue to experience hot and humid conditions.
Rain Likely in Samastipur
According to the latest weather update, Samastipur recorded 11.64 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours. The district witnessed partly cloudy skies on Friday morning, and the IMD has forecast the possibility of rainfall later in the day.
The IMD has advised residents in districts under the yellow alert to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles during lightning activity.
