Patna: Bihar is expected to witness a mixed pattern of intense heat and changing weather conditions during April, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Officials have indicated that heatwave conditions are likely to begin in the second week of April across several parts of the state.
The weather department has warned that both maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain above normal during this period. Typically, the maximum temperature in Bihar during April ranges between 38°C and 40°C, while the minimum temperature remains between 22°C and 24°C. However, this year temperatures are expected to rise beyond these averages.
Different weather pattern expected in April 2026
Meteorologists say the weather pattern in April 2026 will differ slightly from last year. While the intensity of heat is expected to remain high, the state may also experience more rainfall compared to April 2025.
Weather conditions in April 2025
Last year, Bihar experienced prolonged and intense heat during April. From the second week onwards, temperatures in several districts crossed 40°C.
Cities such as Gaya, Patna, and Aurangabad recorded temperatures as high as 42°C. Heatwave conditions persisted in many areas, and rainfall was minimal throughout the month. Even nighttime temperatures remained high, providing little relief to residents.
What may change in April 2026
In April 2026, the maximum temperature is again expected to remain above normal, meaning that heat conditions are unlikely to ease significantly. Where temperatures typically hover between 38°C and 40°C, they may exceed that range this year.
However, the key difference this year could be rainfall. The IMD has predicted above-normal rainfall across Bihar, which means thunderstorms and intermittent showers may occur during the month. These weather events could provide occasional relief from the intense heat.
Clear skies and strong sunlight
April usually brings clear skies across Bihar with minimal cloud formation. As a result, sunlight directly reaches the ground, causing rapid heating of the surface. With longer daylight hours during this time of the year, the effect of sunlight lasts longer, leading to a steady rise in temperature and increasing the likelihood of heatwave conditions.
During this period, hot and dry winds typically blow from the western and north-western directions. These winds, commonly known as ‘loo’, reduce moisture in the atmosphere, preventing cooling and intensifying the heat. Continuous exposure to such winds can significantly affect the human body and further push temperatures higher.
Current weather outlook
For now, weather conditions in Bihar are expected to remain largely normal, though temperatures are gradually rising.
According to the IMD, temperatures across all districts are likely to remain above normal until April 5, with residents likely to face strong sunlight and hot winds.
A change in weather is expected from April 6 onwards. Several districts may experience thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall, which could bring slight relief from the heat.
Weather forecast for Patna today
In Patna, the weather is expected to remain normal but warm today. Strong sunshine is likely from the morning, and temperatures may peak during the afternoon.
The maximum temperature is expected to range between 34°C and 36°C, while the minimum temperature may remain between 24°C and 26°C.
No rainfall is expected today, and the weather will remain dry throughout the day. Some relief may be felt during the evening hours, although humidity levels may remain high. Residents have been advised to take precautions against strong sunlight and hot winds.
