Patna: The monsoon is gradually weakening over Bihar, but weather conditions are yet to return to normal, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting rain in several parts of the state over the next few days.
The weather department has issued a yellow alert for rain in 19 districts, including Patna, for Tuesday. While most other districts are expected to experience generally normal weather, isolated drizzle or light showers may occur at some places.
The IMD has attributed the possibility of increased rainfall activity to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is moving west-northwestwards and is expected to influence weather conditions over eastern India.
Bihar records 37% rainfall deficit
Monsoon activity remained weak across Bihar during the past 24 hours. Light to moderate rainfall was recorded at several places in eastern Bihar, parts of central Bihar and isolated locations in the southwest.
In contrast, weather remained largely dry over northwestern Bihar.
According to rainfall data, Bihar has received around 589.2 mm of rainfall so far this monsoon season, against the normal rainfall of 931.9 mm for the corresponding period. This represents a rainfall deficit of around 37%.
Rain likely to increase over the next few days
Weather conditions are expected to become more active in parts of Bihar from September 23 onwards.
In Patna, partly cloudy skies are expected, with the possibility of rain or thundershowers. The temperature is likely to remain between 34°C and 27°C.
The forecast for the coming days is:
- September 23: Cloudy conditions are likely across several districts, with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. Temperatures may remain between 33°C and 27°C.
- September 24: Cloudy weather with moderate rainfall is expected in several areas. Temperatures may range from 30°C to 26°C.
- September 25: Rainfall activity is likely to increase, with the possibility of heavy rain in parts of the state. Temperatures may remain around 30°C to 24°C.
Bay of Bengal system may intensify
According to the IMD, a low-pressure area over the east-central and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal was moving west-northwestwards as of the morning of September 21.
The system is expected to undergo further changes over the next 24 hours, with indications that it could strengthen into a depression.
The weather system is forecast to continue moving west-northwestwards and may reach the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts around the morning of September 23.
Its movement is expected to influence weather conditions across eastern India, including Bihar. Southern and central parts of Bihar may see increased cloud cover and rainfall activity as the system progresses.
Residents in areas covered by the yellow alert are advised to follow the latest IMD updates, particularly during thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain.
