Patna: Bihar is set to get a dedicated women’s university, with Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary announcing that the proposed institution will be exclusively for women. From students and teachers to officials and the Vice-Chancellor, all positions at the university are proposed to be held by women.
The announcement was made during the launch of the ‘Samriddh Mahila Samriddh Bihar Abhiyan’ at Bapu Sabhagar in Patna on Thursday. The government also announced several measures aimed at expanding opportunities for women in higher education, employment, entrepreneurship and research.
Women to Have Exclusive Opportunities at Proposed University
According to the announcement, only female students will be admitted to the proposed university. Teaching, administrative and other staff positions will also be filled by women.
The institution is expected to provide opportunities for women in higher education, research and academic development. However, details regarding its location, establishment timeline, courses and admission process have not yet been announced.
Around ₹600 Crore Transferred to 5 Lakh Women
At the launch of the women-focused campaign, around ₹600 crore was transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to the bank accounts of approximately 5 lakh women under the Women’s Employment Scheme.
The first and second instalments were transferred to beneficiaries with the objective of supporting women in employment and self-employment activities.
The government has said that greater economic participation by women will contribute to Bihar’s overall development while creating opportunities in both rural and urban areas.
₹20,000 Crore Plan for Jivika Didis by 2030
The Chief Minister also announced plans to spend approximately ₹20,000 crore by 2030 on the development and empowerment of women associated with Jivika self-help groups.
The proposed investment is aimed at expanding access to financial assistance, training, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. Jivika groups have become an important part of Bihar’s rural economy, particularly by supporting women-led livelihoods.
Three Women-Centric Schemes Already Launched
The latest announcement follows the launch of three schemes focused on women and girls a day earlier—the Beti Startup Challenge, Balika PhD Fellowship and Police Didi Yojana.
Under the Beti Startup Challenge, women entrepreneurs will be eligible for financial assistance ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh. The scheme is expected to benefit around 2,100 women.
The Balika PhD Fellowship will provide eligible female PhD students with a monthly stipend of ₹10,000 for four years. Around 1,000 female researchers are expected to benefit.
4,700 Two-Wheelers Flagged Off Under Police Didi Initiative
The government has also launched the Police Didi initiative aimed at improving the safety of girls and women around educational institutions.
Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary flagged off 4,700 two-wheelers, with Police Didi personnel set to be deployed around schools and colleges. The initiative is intended to strengthen the sense of security among female students and provide a more supportive environment around educational institutions.
The series of announcements marks a broader push by the Bihar government to link women’s education with employment, entrepreneurship, research and safety, while creating dedicated institutional and financial support mechanisms for women across the state.
