Patna : The construction of Bihar’s first double-decker elevated road on Ashok Rajpath is in its final phase, with authorities aiming for an inauguration in April. Built at a cost of Rs422 crore, the project is expected to significantly ease congestion in Patna, providing a direct link between Gandhi Maidan and the National Institute of Technology (NIT).
According to the state’s Bridge Construction Department, the construction agency has been instructed to complete all work by the end of March. Once operational, the elevated corridor is set to modernise the city’s transport system, offering smoother and faster connectivity for thousands of daily commuters.
Metro and elevated road construction progress together
The project runs parallel to Patna Metro’s development, particularly near Anjuman Islamia Hall, where casting work is still pending. Officials from the Bridge Construction Corporation have confirmed that they are awaiting approval from Patna Metro authorities to proceed. However, construction on other parts of the structure is nearly complete.
How will it work? Who will benefit?
The double-decker design will have distinct lanes for different travel directions:
The upper level will cater to traffic heading from Gandhi Maidan to NIT.
The lower level will be used by vehicles moving from NIT to Gandhi Maidan.
Additionally, three major connectivity points—PMCH, Krishna Ghat, and Science College—have been integrated into the design. The Krishna Ghat connection will provide access to the JP Ganga Path, enhancing overall mobility within the city.
For commuters traveling from Patna City towards Gandhi Maidan, the lower level of the elevated road near Patna College will serve as a key transit route.
A major relief for traffic congestion
Ashok Rajpath has long been plagued by heavy traffic, leading to delays and congestion. With the launch of the double-decker elevated road, officials anticipate a significant reduction in travel time, streamlining Patna’s transport network.
