Patna: Vehicles will start plying on Bihar’s first double-decker flyover from Kargil Chowk to NIT Mor in the first week of April, marking a major step towards easing congestion on Patna’s bustling Ashok Rajpath. The 2.2km flyover, a first-of-its-kind project in the state, is in its final stages, with construction expected to be completed by March.
The long-awaited infrastructure boost comes as a relief to commuters who have long struggled with heavy traffic in the area. The project gained momentum after a key obstacle near Anjuman Islamia Hall was cleared, and the final touches, including the construction of ramps at four locations, are now nearing completion.
However, while the flyover promises smoother travel, the condition of service roads along Ashok Rajpath has deteriorated significantly due to ongoing work on both the flyover and the metro project. The district administration has taken a firm stance on this issue, preparing to issue notices to the construction agencies responsible.
How The Flyover Will Function
In the initial phase, the double-decker flyover will facilitate movement between Kargil Chowk and Krishna Ghat. Commuters traveling from Kargil Chowk will descend near Patna University from the second floor of the flyover. Those heading in the opposite direction will access the first floor near Patna College and exit near BN College to reach Kargil Chowk.
The second phase of the project will extend the facility to NIT Mor. Once metro construction near Science College is complete, an additional ramp will be built, allowing vehicles to travel directly from Kargil Chowk to NIT Mor.
Measures To Reduce Noise And Enhance Aesthetics
Given the densely populated stretch between Kargil Chowk and NIT Mor—home to institutions such as BN College, PMCH, Khuda Bakhsh Library, Patna College, and Science College—efforts are being made to mitigate the impact of increased traffic. Sound barriers are being installed along the flyover to reduce noise pollution for residents, and to enhance the area’s aesthetics, colorful LED lighting will illuminate the structure at night. Additionally, trees will be planted beneath the flyover and along its pillars to introduce greenery.
Five Ramps For Seamless Connectivity
To ensure smooth entry and exit, ramps are being built at five locations: Krishna Ghat, Patna College, BN College, Kargil Chowk, and Science College. Most of these ramps are structurally complete, with only final finishing work remaining.
Patna District Magistrate Dr. Chandrashekhar Singh confirmed that all major hurdles in construction have been addressed and that work is progressing at a fast pace. Regarding the damaged service roads, he said notices will soon be issued to the concerned agencies, ensuring necessary repairs are undertaken promptly.
