Bodh Gaya: The grand inauguration of the Bodh Mahotsav 2025 took place at Kalachakra Ground in Bodh Gaya on Friday evening, with Bihar’s tourism minister, Nitish Mishra, formally opening the event. He was joined by cooperative minister Dr Prem Kumar, MLA Manju Agarwal, district council president Naina Devi, deputy mayor Chinta Devi, and other dignitaries.

Speaking at the event, Mishra expressed his pride in participating in the Buddhist Festival for the first time. He highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to establish Bihar as a global tourism hub, emphasising Gaya’s cultural and religious significance. “Gaya holds importance not only for Bihar but for the entire country. We are actively working to promote eco-tourism and religious tourism, ensuring Bihar’s tourist destinations gain international recognition,” he said.

He also spoke about key infrastructure projects aimed at boosting tourism, including the development of Bihar’s largest industrial area in Dobhi, the expansion of Gaya airport, and the construction of the Vishnupad-Bodh Gaya Corridor. “Bodh Gaya is not just a cultural centre; it is a platform to showcase our civilisation and heritage to the world. Visitors should be welcomed with the spirit of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’,” he added.

The festival began with a cultural programme, opening with the Bihar Gaurav Gaan, followed by folk performances such as ‘Bangla Mein Udela Gulal’ by local artists. International performers from Vietnam and Cambodia also captivated the audience with their traditional music and dance.

The performances, blending Indian and global artistic expressions, celebrated Bihar’s rich cultural legacy, bringing to life the historical and spiritual significance of the land of Buddha.

Mishra emphasised the economic impact of tourism, stating that it contributes 6.5% to India’s GDP, and reaffirmed the Bihar government’s commitment to strengthening the sector. “This festival in Bodh Gaya will serve as a major branding initiative for Bihar. Those who visit Bodh Gaya once carry its essence in their hearts forever,” he said.

The Bodh Mahotsav 2025 underscored Bihar’s potential to establish a strong global presence in the cultural and tourism sectors. Rooted in the teachings of Lord Buddha, the event aims to elevate Bihar’s stature on the world tourism map.
