Chhapra/Patna:A late-night ammonia gas leak at a cold storage facility in Chhapra’s Sadha Dhala locality triggered panic among residents after a reported gas cylinder explosion on Thursday.
Police, fire services, ambulance teams and health department personnel were deployed to the area after residents complained of eye irritation, breathing difficulties and anxiety. Authorities launched relief and containment operations shortly after receiving information about the incident.
Residents evacuated homes amid health concerns
According to local residents, a loud explosion was heard at Rama Cold Storage before ammonia began leaking from the facility. The gas reportedly spread across the surrounding area, creating low-visibility conditions and causing discomfort among people living nearby.
Many residents left their homes and gathered on nearby roads as the leak continued. Several people reported symptoms including restlessness, nausea and vomiting. Health officials said some women experiencing severe discomfort were shifted to Sadar Hospital for treatment.
Fire services work to contain leak
Fire brigade personnel, supported by police and medical teams, worked to bring the situation under control. Officials said water and specialised chemical sprays were being used to reduce the impact of the gas and limit its spread.
Emergency services remained at the site as authorities monitored conditions in the affected area.
Safety concerns raised over facility location
The incident has renewed concerns about industrial safety in densely populated neighbourhoods. Residents said the cold storage facility is located close to residential areas and argued that a delay in containment could have resulted in a more serious situation.
The locality remained on alert for several hours as emergency teams continued mitigation efforts.
Officials point to possible safety deficiencies
Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nitesh Kumar and Assistant Superintendent of Police Ram Pukar Singh visited the site and inspected the facility.
According to officials, preliminary findings indicated shortcomings in safety measures at the cold storage unit. The management has been directed to take corrective steps and strengthen safety protocols following the incident.
