Chhapra: Panic spread through Chhapra district on September 1 after residents discovered a parachute in a forest near a private school, days after heightened warnings over possible terror threats from the Nepal border.
Villagers reported seeing a person descend on the parachute before fleeing, though police searching the area found no trace of an individual. Officers did, however, recover a 50-metre plastic rope attached to the parachute.
The incident took place in the Kopa police station area, where crowds gathered quickly after the parachute was spotted. Additional security forces searched the area for hours, but no further evidence was found.
The unexplained find has triggered widespread unease, with locals linking it to recent discussions of potential cross-border infiltration. Many residents say they remain fearful until authorities identify the person who may have landed.
Police have stepped up vigilance in surrounding villages, while search operations continue.
