Patna: In a landmark move to promote women’s safety and empowerment in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to launch the state’s first-ever women-only ‘Pink Bus’ service on Friday in Patna. The initiative, developed by the Department of Transport, aims to provide women and girl students with a safe, convenient and affordable mode of public transport in key urban areas.
The service will initially roll out 20 CNG-powered mini buses under the urban bus scheme in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga and Purnia. Eight of these buses will operate in Patna, with four in Muzaffarpur, and two each in Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, Gaya and Purnia.
Each bus will be fitted with modern safety and comfort features, including GPS tracking, CCTV surveillance, panic buttons, mobile charging points and first-aid kits. Notably, female conductors will be deployed on all routes to further enhance passengers’ comfort and sense of security.
Transport Minister Sheela Kumari described the Pink Bus service as not just a transport initiative but a crucial step towards social empowerment. “This programme will strengthen women’s confidence and ensure that mobility is not a barrier to opportunity,” she said, adding that the service will be expanded to more cities in future phases. A second phase is expected to include 80 additional buses.
Transport Secretary Sandeep Kumar R Pudakalkatti noted that the service is specially designed for working women, homemakers, and students, ensuring a safe and respectful travel experience tailored to their needs.
The service will be operated by the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC), which has overseen the acquisition and deployment of the vehicles.
