Patna: Motorcyclists in Patna are falling victim to severe cold-related injuries as high-speed rides expose them to the dangers of hypothermia. Over the past week, emergency departments have been inundated with cases. The LNJP Bone Superspeciality Hospital is receiving 20–25 road accident victims daily, while three to five cases involving head injuries, multiple fractures, and eye trauma are reported daily at IGIMS.
According to medical professionals, the combination of cold weather and high-speed riding is a significant contributor to these incidents. Although the temperature in the city hovers around 10°C, the chilling effect of cold winds at high speed can feel as low as 4.5°C, drastically increasing health risks.
Young Riders at Risk of Hypothermia
Dr. Manish Mandal, Medical Superintendent at IGIMS, highlighted the dangers of hypothermia, a condition caused by prolonged exposure to cold air and wet surfaces. “Bike riders are particularly vulnerable to rapid drops in body temperature during cold waves. While the cold wind might feel exhilarating to some, it can quickly lead to hypothermia,” he said.
To avoid such risks, riders are advised to layer their clothing effectively. A cotton vest, thermal innerwear, a woollen jacket, and an insulated outer layer designed to block airflow are essential. Warm gloves, thick socks, shoes, and thermal pants also provide crucial protection.
Dr. Subhash Chandra, Director of LNJP, added: “If your fingers become numb while riding, you should stop and warm them immediately to avoid losing control of the bike’s handle and brakes.” He also recommended wearing goggles, covering the face with a muffler, and ensuring the body is fully insulated.
Safety Measures and Precautions
To further reduce risks, helmets are a must for preventing serious head injuries in accidents. Riders embarking on long-distance journeys should frequently stop to warm up, drink hot beverages, or rest by a fire. Cigarettes and similar substances should be avoided as a source of warmth.
Motorcycle mechanic Sanjay Kumar advised using the bike’s choke for easy starts in cold weather. Riders should also equip their bikes with fog-resistant glasses for better visibility.
Immediate Action for Hypothermia
In cases where someone appears faint or excessively cold, it is critical to move them to a warm location immediately. Drinking hot liquids and layering up are effective first steps, but severe symptoms require urgent medical attention.
Doctors stress the importance of adhering to these guidelines to minimise accidents and health risks. The combination of reckless riding and extreme cold remains a dangerous reality for Patna’s motorcyclists during the ongoing cold wave.
