Darbhanga: Preparations to redevelop Darbhanga Junction railway station into a world-class transport hub have accelerated under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with the project valued at Rs 340 crore. The initiative forms part of a broader effort to modernise railway infrastructure and improve passenger facilities across India.
The development gained momentum after MP Gopal Jee Thakur met Railway Board chairman Satish Kumar at Rail Bhavan in New Delhi. During the meeting, the MP called for faster execution of construction work while stressing the need for transparency and adherence to quality standards throughout the project.
Officials said the redevelopment will introduce modern amenities, improved circulation areas and enhanced connectivity, positioning Darbhanga as a major rail gateway for the Mithila region. Authorities also believe the transformation could stimulate economic activity and strengthen regional mobility by making rail travel more efficient and accessible.
The MP noted that ongoing rail projects across Mithila reflect a wider national push by Indian Railways to upgrade infrastructure using advanced technology. Darbhanga Junction, a key revenue-generating station under the Samastipur division, has been identified as a priority project and officials have been instructed to ensure timely completion.
Alongside the station upgrade, proposals have been submitted to expand train services from Darbhanga, including new long-distance routes to Guwahati and Mumbai, conversion of DEMU services into MEMU rakes, and the introduction of a Darbhanga–Ranchi Vande Bharat service. Additional suggestions include extending the Dehradun–Muzaffarpur Express to Darbhanga during the Kumbh Mela period and launching a new Darbhanga–Kota train.
Railway authorities expect that the combined impact of infrastructure modernisation and service expansion will encourage employment-linked industrial growth while reinforcing Mithila’s strategic importance in eastern India’s transport network.
