Patna : A new forensic digital intelligence lab has been opened in Patna as part of a nationwide effort to crack down on income tax evasion through advanced data analysis.

Launched by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the lab will assist authorities in uncovering financial irregularities in Bihar and Jharkhand by analysing digital data collected during search and survey operations. It is the first such facility in the region.

CBDT chairman Ravi Agarwal, who inaugurated the facility at the Central Revenue Building in Patna, said that the growing use of digital records in place of physical documents poses fresh challenges to investigators. “In response to this shift, we are establishing Digital Intelligence and Analytics Labs across the country,” he said.

Similar labs have already been set up in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Bhopal.

Officials say the Patna lab will enhance the department’s capacity to gather and process digital evidence, strengthening efforts to hold tax evaders accountable.
