Patna: Travelling to Rajgir, one of Bihar’s key religious and tourist destinations, is expected to become more convenient following the introduction of additional train services ahead of the 2026 Malmas Mela.
The Railways has expanded direct connectivity to Rajgir from Patna and several nearby cities, including Danapur, Bakhtiyarpur, Bihar Sharif and Fatuha. Officials said the move is aimed at easing passenger movement during the mela period, when footfall traditionally rises sharply.
Daily Services From Patna
Among the key services, the 63274 Patna–Rajgir Fast MEMU departs daily from Patna Junction at 8:55 PM and reaches Rajgir in around two-and-a-half hours.
Another major service, the 13354 Patna–Rajgir Express, leaves Patna at 9:20 AM and arrives in Rajgir at 12:45 PM. Railway officials said both trains remain popular among students, office commuters and pilgrims.
Improved Connectivity From Danapur
Passengers travelling from Danapur and adjoining areas have also received improved rail access to Rajgir.
The 13234 Danapur–Koderma Express departs Danapur at 6:40 AM and reaches Rajgir at approximately 10:05 AM. MEMU services operating through Patna, Fatuha and Bakhtiyarpur have further strengthened regional connectivity.
Bakhtiyarpur–Rajgir Route Sees High Demand
The Bakhtiyarpur–Rajgir section continues to serve as the main rail corridor connecting Rajgir with central Bihar.
Local and MEMU trains running through Bihar Sharif, Silao and Pawapuri carry thousands of passengers daily. Railway authorities expect passenger numbers to increase significantly during the Malmas Mela period in 2026.
Long-Distance Trains Link Rajgir With Other States
Rajgir’s rail network has also seen improved long-distance connectivity with major cities outside Bihar.
The 12392 Shramjeevi Express connects New Delhi with Rajgir via Buxar, Ara and Patna. The 15138 Buddha Purnima Express from Varanasi remains an important service for travellers visiting sites associated with the Buddhist Circuit.
The 13201 Lokmanya Tilak–Rajgir Express from Mumbai provides direct access for migrant workers and other passengers travelling between Maharashtra and Bihar. In addition, the 03029 Howrah–Rajgir Special Train offers connectivity from West Bengal.
Direct Connectivity Still Limited In North Bihar
Despite the expanded services, several districts in north Bihar continue to lack direct train access to Rajgir.
Passengers travelling from Muzaffarpur, Samastipur and Darbhanga currently need to change trains at Patna or Bakhtiyarpur, as no direct services are available from these cities.
Additional Services Planned For Mela Period
Railway officials said preparations for the 2026 Malmas Mela include plans to add extra coaches and operate more special trains to manage the expected rise in passenger traffic.
Authorities said the measures are intended to improve travel convenience and reduce congestion during the religious gathering
