Patna: As the festival of lights, Diwali, approaches, the air is filled with joyous celebrations and the aroma of delicious feasts. However, amidst the festivities, the use of firecrackers demands heightened safety measures, with a focus on first aid tips to address burn injuries effectively.

Dr Vikas ShankarIn an exclusive interview, Patna- based noted dermatologist and skin expert Dr Vikas Shankar provided valuable guidance on precautions and remedies for dealing with burns caused by fireworks during Diwali celebrations.

Emphasizing the need for caution, particularly among children, Dr Shankar urged against the dangerous practice of holding crackers in hands, citing the potential for sudden blasts and resultant injuries.

In the event of a firecracker-related accident causing burns, Dr Shankar advised people to not to panic. For skin burns, he recommended using tap water to wash the affected area for a specified duration to neutralize heat and remove dust particles. Stressing the importance of not applying force, he cautioned against common misconceptions, such as using toothpaste on burns, which could damage the skin.

In case of burns, Dr Shankar suggested promptly getting a Tetanus shot and seeking immediate consultation with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. He also cautioned against relying on social media and YouTube-driven home remedies, advocating instead for the application of antibiotic creams and painkillers in rural areas where specialized expertise might be limited.

He underscored the significance of consulting professionals for proper care and treatment, dispelling myths that could exacerbate the impact of firecracker injuries.
