Patna: A sudden change in weather has triggered a rise in flu cases across the capital and nearby districts, with hospitals reporting a steady flow of patients suffering from colds, coughs, fevers and body aches.
Doctors at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), IGIMS, NMCH, New Gardiner Road Hospital and Gardanibagh Hospital said that while the number of general patients has dipped during the Chhath festival, cases of flu and viral infections have increased in medicine departments.
Hospital records suggest that between 200 and 300 patients are being treated daily in outpatient and emergency wards, with around 50 showing symptoms of flu or viral infection. A Patna-based doctor said the rise was linked to fluctuating weather conditions, though the situation in other outpatient departments remains normal.
Specialists also noted a spike in digestive complaints alongside flu symptoms. A Patna-based gastroenterologist said stomach pain, gas, vomiting and diarrhoea were becoming common. “Many patients are also reporting persistent coughs, phlegm and colds,” the doctor added.
Another Patna-based respiratory specialist described the flu as a seasonal viral infection. “The difference in day and night temperatures and the onset of cold winds are driving its spread,” the doctor said. “There is no need to panic, but patients should seek medical advice if symptoms worsen.”
Private hospitals and clinics are also reporting a rise in cases. Doctors warned that ignoring early symptoms often leads to more severe illness.
Health advice issued by doctors includes:
- Drink lukewarm water and avoid cold beverages
- Use a handkerchief or mask when coughing or sneezing
- Avoid crowded places
- Do not take antibiotics without medical guidance
- Maintain a balance of sleep and nutrition
