Patna: Aditya Kumar, the former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Gaya, surrendered in Patna Civil Court (ACJM-1) at 4 pm on Tuesday, complying with the Supreme Court’s directive to surrender within two weeks. Aditya Kumar, a suspended IPS officer from the 2011 batch of the Bihar cadre, was ordered by the Supreme Court to surrender, and following his surrender, he was promptly sent to Beur jail under tight security.
Upon completion of the necessary procedures at the jail gate, Aditya Kumar was admitted to the special ward within Beur jail. Hrishikesh Narayan Singh, a lawyer from the Economic Offenses Unit, revealed that Aditya Kumar had allegedly attempted to manipulate the liquor scandal case by implicating the name of a judge in his defense. Despite appealing for bail in the Supreme Court, Aditya Kumar did not secure bail, leading to the court’s order for him to surrender.
Aditya Kumar faces accusations of using his influence to enlist the help of his friend Abhishek Aggarwal in impersonating the Chief Justice of Patna High Court and calling then Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjeev Kumar Singhal. The intention was to influence Singhal to close the case against him, cease proceedings, and secure a more favorable posting.
The liquor scandal case against Aditya Kumar dates back to his tenure as the SSP of Gaya, where he faced an FIR for negligence in handling the case. A significant conspiracy was allegedly orchestrated to suppress the case, involving Abhishek’s use of the Chief Justice’s identity on WhatsApp to pressure Singhal into favorable action.
The matter came to light when Abhishek, posing as the Chief Justice, made WhatsApp calls to senior administrative officers, including Singhal. Following an investigation by the Economic Offenses Unit, case number 33/22 was registered last year, leading to Abhishek’s imprisonment.
Aditya Kumar had been evading authorities since an FIR was filed against him in October of the previous year, resulting in his suspension. He obtained a stay order from the Supreme Court in May to avoid arrest. However, on November 22, the Supreme Court bench, comprising Justice Aniruddha Bose, Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, and Justice Augustine George Masih, dismissed Aditya’s anticipatory bail plea and ordered him to surrender within two weeks.
Given the presence of Naxalites from Gaya and other arrested individuals in Beur jail, arrangements have been made to house Aditya Kumar in a special ward.
