Patna: The Ganga River has breached the danger mark at several locations in Patna, prompting authorities to issue flood alerts and step up rescue and relief operations. A report released on Saturday by the Chief Engineer of Flood Control and Drainage, Ganga Zone, Digha, confirmed rising water levels in both the Ganga and its tributaries, the Son and Punpun rivers.
At key locations in the capital, the water level has climbed significantly. In Patna, Gandhi Ghat recorded 50.29 metres, while Hathidah stood at 41.89 metres — both above the danger threshold. Digha Ghat also approached critical levels. Further upstream, the Ganga reached 82.09 metres in Allahabad and 69.90 metres in Varanasi, with water continuing to rise.
The Son River at Koilwar registered a rise to 54.74 metres, and the Punpun River at Kinjar stood at 65.13 metres. Although some locations witnessed minor fluctuations, the overall situation remains concerning.
Authorities have attributed the spike in water levels to continuous heavy rainfall and increased inflow in the river systems. Low-lying areas of Patna have reported severe waterlogging, compounding public distress.
In response, the district administration has mobilised the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to assist with evacuation and relief efforts. Residents have been warned to avoid riverbanks and remain in safe zones. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed officials to closely monitor the situation and ensure that affected communities receive timely assistance.
