During the year, both metals have also recorded sharp peaks. Gold touched an all-time high of Rs 1.76 lakh per 10 grams, while silver reached Rs 3.86 lakh per kilogram on January 29.
Why Gold Prices Differ Across Cities
Gold prices can vary from one city to another because of several factors. Transportation and security costs are added when gold is moved between cities, with longer distances potentially increasing these expenses.
Local demand and purchase volumes can also influence prices. South India accounts for a significant share of India’s gold consumption, leading jewellery retailers in the region to make large-volume purchases.
Local jewellery associations also play a role in determining market rates based on prevailing local supply and demand conditions.
Another factor is the price at which jewellers purchased their existing stock. The procurement cost of older inventory can influence the price at which gold is subsequently sold to customers.
Buy Certified Gold With BIS Hallmark
Consumers should ensure that the gold they purchase is certified and carries the BIS hallmark.
The hallmark includes an alphanumeric identification code, which helps indicate the purity of the gold. Buyers should check the hallmark and verify the purity before completing a purchase.
Check the Gold Rate Before Buying
Customers should verify the day’s gold rate before purchasing jewellery and cross-check the price with reliable sources, including IBJA rates.
The price also varies according to purity. Common categories include 24-carat, 22-carat and 18-carat gold, so buyers should confirm the purity and corresponding rate before making a purchase.
Buyers should also ensure that the weight of the jewellery is accurately measured and matches the details provided on the bill.
Making Charges Can Be Negotiated
Making charges are the fees charged by jewellers for converting gold into jewellery. These charges are not uniform and can vary depending on the design and jeweller.
Customers can ask for a clear breakdown of the making charges and compare them before making a purchase. For larger purchases, there may also be scope to negotiate these charges.
A detailed bill showing the gold rate, weight, purity, making charges and applicable taxes can help buyers understand the total cost of their purchase.
