Four factors can influence local gold prices:
- Transportation and security: Moving gold between cities involves fuel, transportation and security costs.
- Purchase volume: Jewellery demand differs across regions and can influence local buying patterns.
- Local jewellery associations: Local demand and supply conditions can affect the rates quoted by jewellers.
- Old stock and purchase price: The price at which jewellers purchased their existing stock can influence the selling price.

What To Check Before Buying Gold
Buyers should check the purity and prevailing rate before purchasing gold jewellery.
Buy BIS-hallmarked gold: Consumers should look for Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) hallmarking on gold jewellery. The hallmark indicates the purity of the gold and includes an alphanumeric identification code.
Cross-check the price: Buyers should verify the weight and gold rate on the day of purchase through reliable sources. Gold prices differ according to purity, including 24-carat, 22-carat and 18-carat gold.
