Patna: Sixteen-year-old Goldie Kumari from Nalanda, Bihar, was awarded the Prime Minister National Bal Puraskar by President Draupadi Murmu in a grand ceremony in Delhi. Goldie, who lost her left hand in a train accident as a baby, won one gold and two silver medals at the World Para Olympic Youth Games held in Thailand from December 1 to 7. Her achievements earned her national recognition for her remarkable spirit and determination.
Goldie’s life has been marked by immense struggles. At just 10 months old, she lost her mother and her left hand in a tragic accident at Bakhtiyarpur Railway Junction. Despite the challenges, she was raised by her grandmother and great-grandmother, who nurtured her dreams. Today, Goldie aspires to bring further glory to India by winning a medal in the Paralympics.
Goldie began her sports journey in Class 8, competing against able-bodied students and winning medals. She gained prominence by excelling in events at district, state, and national levels before making her mark internationally. At the 13th National Junior and Sub Junior Para Athletics Championship, she won one gold and two silver medals, showcasing her extraordinary talent and perseverance.
Biju Thomas, the principal of St. Paul English School, expressed immense pride in Goldie’s accomplishments, stating that she has brought laurels to her country. Her determination, resilience, and success stand as an inspiration to all, proving that no challenge is insurmountable with courage and hard work.
