Patna: In a major urban development push, Patna Municipal Corporation has announced a citywide initiative to construct parks and public toilets in all of the city’s 75 wards. The effort, part of a broader urban renewal strategy, is aimed at providing residents with essential public infrastructure right within their neighbourhoods.
Officials say the move will give citizens access to clean sanitation facilities and open green spaces for recreation, fitness, and play.
Under this plan, land for the construction of public toilets is being identified in each ward. The Municipal Commissioner has instructed zonal offices to coordinate closely with elected ward councillors to mark suitable locations. The project is being carried out under the central government’s Swachh Bharat Mission, which promotes sanitation and hygiene across India. In the first phase, site selection will be the focus, ensuring that facilities are placed where they can benefit the maximum number of residents.
Simultaneously, the city will also see the development of new parks and water bodies under the AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme. In many parts of Patna, particularly in densely populated colonies, there is a lack of green spaces. The municipal body aims to change this by setting aside land for parks where children can play and adults can exercise or relax. Parks, officials say, are not just about leisure—they are key to improving mental and physical health.
In addition to parks, ponds will be developed to promote water conservation and biodiversity. These water bodies will help recharge groundwater, support local flora and fauna, and offer natural beauty in the heart of the city. All six municipal zones have been directed to identify suitable land parcels for these developments, again in collaboration with ward councillors. The twin goals of the initiative—cleaner sanitation and greener spaces—promise to make Patna not only more liveable but also more resilient in the face of urban challenges.
