Patna: Two cases of H1N1 influenza, commonly known as swine flu, have been confirmed in Patna, with the patients including a scientist from the Rajendra Memorial Research Institute of Medical Sciences (RMRI).
The two patients, aged 47 and 52, are residents of Agamkuan and Kankarbagh. Both are reported to be out of danger and are undergoing treatment.
More Than 25 Samples Tested
Samples from the two patients were sent to the RMRI laboratory after they developed symptoms associated with influenza. Laboratory tests subsequently confirmed H1N1 infection.
RMRI said it received samples from more than 25 suspected patients referred by various hospitals over the past week. Two of the samples tested positive for H1N1.
Vigilance Increased Amid Delhi, UP Cases
RMRI director Krishna Pandey said H1N1 cases have been increasing in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, prompting the institute to step up surveillance in Bihar.
Instructions have been issued to expedite the testing and reporting of samples from patients suspected of having the infection.
Symptoms To Watch
Common symptoms of H1N1 influenza include fever, cold, cough, sore throat, headache, body ache and fatigue. Some patients may also develop breathing difficulties.
People experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms have been advised to seek medical attention rather than delay consultation.
Hygiene And Precautions
Health precautions include covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing and washing hands regularly with soap and water.
People with fever, cough or cold should avoid crowded places and limit close contact with others, particularly those who may be vulnerable to infection.
Used tissues should be disposed of properly, while adequate rest and fluid intake are recommended during illness.
Health authorities also advise against self-medication. Antibiotics and other medicines should not be taken without medical advice, as antibiotics do not treat influenza viruses.
