Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 25 districts in Bihar, warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds over the next 24 hours. The alert comes amid a spell of intermittent rain that has already affected several regions, raising river levels and disrupting daily life in multiple districts.
Despite the ongoing showers, the IMD has said there is no major change in weather expected in the next week, particularly in South Bihar, including the capital Patna. While some relief from heat is likely, humidity levels will remain high, keeping discomfort levels elevated.
Rainfall Updates and River Status
In the past 24 hours, Araria recorded the highest rainfall at 160 mm, followed by 107 mm in Bhagalpur. Light to moderate showers were reported in at least ten districts, including Patna.
The water level in the Ganga river has shown a worrying rise. In Bhagalpur, the Ganga has touched 32.78 meters, exceeding the warning level of 32.68 meters. In Munger, the river has reached 38.42 meters, also above the warning threshold of 38.33 meters. Flood control measures are being closely monitored by district administrations.
Meanwhile, Koshi Barrage has opened 18 of its 56 gates due to increased water inflow from Nepal’s Terai and hilly regions. This is the third time this year that the discharge has exceeded 1 lakh cusecs, posing risks to low-lying areas.
Bridge Cracks, Flood Threats in Jamui
In Jamui district, the Barmasia causeway bridge developed a crack after the Ulai river rose suddenly, bringing water levels to within a foot of the bridge deck in just 15 minutes. The pressure of water also caused nearby buildings to tilt, and a government toilet structure partially collapsed as the soil beneath it was washed away.
Authorities have now completely restricted movement across the bridge by erecting a 4-foot wall, cutting off access to over 30,000 residents in Chakai, Sono, and Jhajha blocks. Relief efforts are underway, but residents remain isolated.
Urban Flooding and Erosion in Patna Region
In Patna, several low-lying areas such as Mahatmain Tal (Salarpur) and Horal Bigha (Daniyawan) are witnessing waterlogging. The Dardha and Dhoba rivers have increased pressure on local embankments, particularly the Zamindari dam in Masnadpur. Soil erosion is being reported in Nisbuchak village of Fatuha’s Mominpur Panchayat, where the Dhoba river continues to swell.
Rainfall Deficit Despite Local Flooding
Interestingly, despite localized heavy rains and rising water levels, Bihar as a whole has received 41% less rainfall than normal so far this monsoon season. The state has received 234 mm of rainfall against the expected 395.7 mm, according to the IMD.
Weather Forecast for Patna
The sky over Patna is expected to remain cloudy, with light to moderate showers likely in the next 24 hours. Daytime temperatures may hover around 34–35°C, while the minimum temperature is expected to stay near 26°C. Light winds could provide partial relief, but high humidity will continue to affect residents.
