Patna: Residents of Bihar’s West Champaran and Madhubani districts were treated to a rare view of Nepal’s Himalayan mountain range on October 28, as the mountains became clearly visible from several locations amid changing weather conditions associated with Cyclone Arnab.

The unusual spectacle generated considerable excitement, with people capturing photographs and videos from their rooftops and sharing them widely on social media.

A similar sight had been reported during the Covid-19 lockdown around five years ago. The latest appearance of the distant mountain range has brought back memories of that period for many residents.

Himalayas visible from Bagaha, Jainagar

In West Champaran, the Himalayan range was clearly visible from Bagaha on October 28. Despite fluctuating weather and intermittent drizzle linked to Cyclone Arnab, residents were surprised by the clarity of the view.

Bagaha is approximately 45km from Valmikinagar. Beyond the Gandak Barrage lies Nepal’s Triveni region, from where the mountains appear considerably closer.

A similar view was reported from Jainagar in Madhubani district. Residents near the Kamala Bridge were able to see the Himalayan range on October 28, attracting attention across the border region.

Scientific reason remains unconfirmed

The clear visibility of the mountains is believed to be linked to reduced pollution or improved atmospheric clarity following changes in weather conditions associated with the cyclone. However, there has been no official confirmation of the reasons behind the phenomenon.

By Friday, cloud cover and unfavourable weather had obscured the view. Nevertheless, videos and photographs continued to circulate on social media, with residents discussing how the distant Himalayan range had become visible despite the unsettled weather.

The unusual sight has also prompted curiosity about the atmospheric and environmental conditions that made the mountains visible from these parts of Bihar.
