Patna: In a shocking incident of road rage and public endangerment, miscreants riding in a black Scorpio SUV opened fire near the busy Pahalwan Market on Boring Canal Road on Saturday (May 24) evening. The violence reportedly erupted after a minor car collision escalated into a heated altercation, leading to eight rounds of gunfire in a crowded area.
The incident began when a Baleno car collided with the Scorpio, sparking a dispute between the occupants of the two vehicles and some local residents. Eyewitnesses say that Rohit alias Alter, who was in the Scorpio with three other men and a woman, was humiliated during the confrontation. The woman, reportedly Rohit’s girlfriend, was also in the car which did not have a number plate.
Shortly after the altercation, the group left the scene but returned with additional miscreants in a Thar SUV and opened fire in the market area. A video of the firing—captured on CCTV near the Boring Road flyover—has gone viral on social media, showing one of the accused stepping out and firing at bystanders while others hurled abuses at the public.
Senior Police Officer Witnesses Incident
In a dramatic turn, Additional Director General (ADG) of Law and Order, Pankaj Darad, who was traveling in a white official vehicle, happened to be behind the Scorpio at the time of the incident. His convoy chased the fleeing vehicle and even attempted to puncture its tires by firing at it. The chase continued up to GPO Golambar, but the assailants managed to escape.
Police Action: Five Detained, 14 Cops Suspended
Following the incident, Patna SSP Avkash Kumar issued a high-alert wireless message, flagging the black Scorpio without a number plate. However, the Dial 112 police response team reportedly failed to act swiftly, prompting strict disciplinary action. The SSP has suspended 14 police personnel, including two Sub-Inspectors (SIs) and three Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs), for negligence.
So far, five suspects have been detained for questioning. Among the accused, Rohit alias Alter of Mahendru, Shanu of Sabzibagh, and Sheebu of Kankarbagh have been identified. The Thar SUV used in the follow-up attack has been recovered by the police.
Public Outrage and Safety Concerns
The broad daylight firing in one of Patna’s busiest areas has sparked widespread concern over law and order in the capital city. The fact that a top police officer had to personally intervene has intensified the debate on police preparedness and response protocols.
