Patna: The Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna has received accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for its clinical biochemistry laboratory, becoming the first government-run healthcare institution in Bihar to secure the recognition.
The accreditation covers nearly 100 types of diagnostic tests, according to the institute, and is expected to strengthen the quality and reliability of laboratory services.
Recognition for quality standards
With the NABL accreditation, tests conducted at the laboratory will now be aligned with national and international quality standards. Officials said the certification reflects compliance with established protocols for quality management, equipment calibration and standardised testing procedures.
The institute said the recognition followed the implementation of internal and external quality control systems, along with regular calibration of laboratory equipment.
Impact on patient care
Hospital authorities said the accreditation is expected to benefit patients through more accurate and dependable diagnostic reports.
Medical experts at IGIMS said laboratory investigations play a central role in the timely diagnosis of diseases and treatment planning. Improved report accuracy, they said, can support clinicians in making more informed decisions.
The institute added that standardised processes in accredited laboratories can help ensure consistency and reproducibility in test results.
Institutional response
IGIMS administration described the accreditation as the result of collective efforts by doctors, scientists, technical officers and laboratory staff.
The institute’s director, Prof Dr Bindey Kumar, deputy director (administration) Prof Dr Vibhuti Sinha, and medical superintendent Prof Dr Manish Mandal welcomed the development, calling it a significant step in strengthening healthcare services at the institution.
Faculty members and technical staff from the department of biochemistry also acknowledged the achievement, describing it as an important milestone for the institute and the state’s public health infrastructure.
