IIT Patna Hosts Workshop on Microzonation to Enhance Urban Safety

Patna: The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at IIT Patna recently organized a workshop under the ANRF (SERB)-Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) Program. The event focused on the importance of microzonation in strengthening urban safety, particularly in earthquake-prone regions.

With rising global seismic activity, microzonation plays a key role in assessing the vulnerability of different areas within a city. Patna is currently considering its implementation, especially in regions with older infrastructure and soft soil foundations that are more prone to seismic risks.

The inaugural session saw the participation of several distinguished professors and dignitaries, including Anup Kumar Keshri, Associate Dean (R&D); Subrata Hait, Associate Dean (PG); A.K. Jha, Head (IWD); Vaibhav Singhal, Acting Head (CEE); Ramakrishna Bag; Bachu Anilkumar; Arpit Jain from IIT Patna; and Amarnath Hegde from IIT Dharwad.

The workshop featured insightful sessions by experts from leading institutions, including Dipanjan Basu from the University of Waterloo, Priyanka Ghosh from IIT Kanpur, Abhishek Kumar from IIT Guwahati, and Pradipta Chakrabortty from IIT Patna. They shared their expertise on microzonation and its role in mitigating earthquake-related risks.

The event concluded with a strong call for enhanced collaboration among academic institutions, local authorities, and the private sector to advance microzonation research and ensure its practical implementation in urban planning.
